Mkomazi National Park Day Trip – Where Silence Roars and Wilderness Still Breathes
Venture into the sanctuary of black rhinos, lions & leopards – For Travelers Who Crave the Untamed
Overview
Mkomazi isn’t your most polished and famous park like Serengeti or Tarangire.  It’s not crowded. And that’s exactly the point.
Found quietly in northern Tanzania near the Kenyan border, Mkomazi National Park is wild in the truest sense—raw, dry, honest and definitely incredible. It’s a place of wide skies, dusty tracks, and long silences broken only by the distant bellow of a buffalo or the flap of a martial eagle’s wings.
Here, you won’t find safari traffic jam like in other Northern Tanzania parks such as Serengeti, Tarangire. You’ll find stillness. Wild dogs. Rare rhinos. And a side of Tanzania that most travelers will never know.
This 1-day safari with Serengeti Lion Safaris is for those who want to go deeper. Not just to see—but to feel.

Itinerary Summary
05:30 – Pickup from Arusha
We start early—because Mkomazi is remote, and that’s why it’s beautiful. The road south-east takes us through sleepy villages, mist-draped hills, and landscapes that slowly flatten into savannah. The further we go, the lighter the world feels. The less your phone matters. The more the sky seems to stretch.
09:00 – Arrive at Mkomazi National Park
At the gate, the air is different. Warmer. Drier. Wild. You’ll check in, stretch your legs, and meet your private park ranger. Then your game drive begins—wide open, uninterrupted, and gloriously quiet.
09:30 – 13:00 | Game Drive – Beauty in the Bare
This is a park of subtle drama. Golden plains dotted with acacia, dry riverbeds crisscrossed with animal prints, rocky outcrops where kudu watch from above. You might spot:
- African wild dogs – elusive, rare, fiercely beautiful
- Oryx and lesser kudu – with spiraled horns and cautious eyes
- Elephants and giraffes – fewer here, but powerful in their stillness
- Birdlife – over 400 species, from colorful rollers to giant eagles
The silence is your soundtrack. The views are endless. This is real wilderness—unfiltered, unrushed.
13:00 – Picnic Lunch with a View
We’ll set up a packed lunch at a scenic spot inside the park. Maybe beneath a shady tree, maybe on a small hill with views for miles. No lodges. No fences. Just you, nature, and the sound of wind sliding through tall grass.
14:00 – Rhino Sanctuary Visit (Optional)
This is an exciting site for incredible critically endangered black rhino encounter. It’s a special experience—not just seeing these ancient creatures up close, but understanding the quiet, tireless work being done to protect them.
15:00 – Begin Drive Back to Arusha
As the sun starts its descent, we begin the return drive. The world slowly becomes familiar again—towns, shops, voices. But you’ve changed. Just a little. Just enough.
Arrive back in Arusha by 19:30–20:00, tired but deeply full.
With Serengeti Lion Safaris, we don’t just take you to the famous. We take you to the forgotten. The silent. The sacred. Mkomazi is all of that. And if you let it, it will stay with you long after the dust has settled.
