Itinerary Overview
4-Day Mount Meru Trekking Safari – Walk the Path Few Dare
Overview
Mount Meru is the mountain people often overlook—and the one they never forget. It’s also a mountain many trek first before Kilimanjaro. Standing tall at 4,566 meters, its jagged crater rim and hidden alpine forests lie quietly in the shadow of its big brother, Kilimanjaro. But what it lacks in fame, it makes up for in soul.
This 4-day climb is not just about altitude. It’s about the journey up through whispering forests, encounters with giraffes and buffalo on foot, watching sunrise break over Kilimanjaro from the summit, and feeling—truly feeling—what it means to climb with purpose.
With Serengeti Lion Safaris, this trek isn’t about conquering a peak. It’s about becoming part of the mountain.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Into the Forest – Arusha to Miriakamba Hut
We pick you up from your lodge after breakfast and drive you into Arusha National Park, where your adventure begins at Momella Gate. Formalities, team introductions, and then—it begins. The trail winds through lush montane forest, where giraffes feed on high branches and colobus monkeys leap through the canopy.
As you climb, the air grows quiet. The path softens. The chatter fades. You’re walking not just into altitude, but into stillness.
You’ll reach Miriakamba Hut by late afternoon—simple, warm, and surrounded by mist. Dinner is served beneath the stars if skies are clear.
Wildlife on foot.
Forest so thick it hushes your thoughts.
Campfire optional. Connection guaranteed.
- Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
- Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
- Altitude Gain: 1,000m approx.
Day 2: Into the Clouds – Miriakamba to Saddle Hut
You wake to birdcalls and tea in your hands. Today the hike is steeper, narrower, and breathtaking—literally and visually. You’ll pass through heather and moorland, with breaks revealing views of the crater and beyond.
Reaching Saddle Hut feels like stepping into another world. Sparse. Still. A place built for reflection. In the afternoon, you can hike to Little Meru (3,820m)—a short climb with big views, especially if Kili decides to show herself across the sky.
By nightfall, you’ll eat early and rest. Summit day starts long before sunrise.
- Overnight: Saddle Hut
- Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
- Altitude Gain: 1,056m
Day 3: The Summit – Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak (4,566m) and Down to Miriakamba
At 2:00 AM, you begin your final ascent. The stars feel close. Your breath fogs the air. Every step is slow, focused, meaningful. The summit ridge is dramatic, wind-swept, and narrow—adrenaline hums in your fingertips.
Just before dawn, you reach Socialist Peak. Kilimanjaro glows to the east. The sun spills across Meru’s broken crater. And you—standing where few do—feel small, whole, and utterly alive.
After photos, deep breaths, and quiet celebration, you begin your descent. Back past Saddle Hut. Back to Miriakamba, where warm food and a soft bed wait.
Your legs will ache. But your heart will be flying.
- Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
- Hiking Time: 10–12 hours
- Altitude Gain: 996m up / 2,052m down
Day 4: The Farewell Walk – Return to Momella Gate
The final stretch is gentle, green, and full of gratitude. You descend through shaded paths, pausing to watch birds, reflect on the summit, and enjoy the slow return to ground level.
At Momella Gate, we celebrate with a trekking certificate and heartfelt goodbyes to your mountain crew.
You’ll return to Arusha by early afternoon—changed, a little sunburned, and deeply proud.
