Itinerary Overview

Materuni Waterfall & Coffee Village Day Trip – Hike, Brew, and Breathe

Overview

Just outside Moshi, situated into the green foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro, lies a quiet Chagga village with one of Tanzania’s most beautiful secrets—Materuni Waterfall. The waterfall is a giant one, standing at nearly 80 meters tall, falling into a jungle gorge surrounded by banana farms and birdsong.

But the real magic? It’s in the people. This day trip with Serengeti Lion Safaris invites you into a local village life—sharing stories, roasting fresh coffee the traditional way, and walking beneath vines and waterfalls that feel like something out of a fairytale.

It’s not a game drive. It’s not a tourist show. It’s real, warm, and deeply refreshing encounter that will get your in an exciting adventure mood.

Itinerary Summary

Morning – Pickup from Arusha or Moshi

Early morning, your driver guide will collect you from your hotel around 7:00 AM in Arusha or 8:30 AM in Moshi. After a scenic drive past green hills, you’ll reach Materuni Village, perched on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro.

Mid-Morning – Coffee Tour With the Chagga People

Your village hosts will take you through the full bean-to-cup process. You’ll pick, roast, grind, and sip fresh Arabica coffee, all while learning how the Chagga have farmed and lived here for generations. Expect some songs, jokes, and hands-on fun—this isn’t a lecture, it’s a celebration.

Late Morning – Hike to Materuni Waterfall

A short but beautiful hike (about 45 minutes one way) takes you through banana plantations, lush forest, and across narrow bridges. Along the way, your guide points out local herbs, cultural plants, and Kilimanjaro’s cloud-draped peaks.

The hike may be somewhat demanding but, it’s worth the efforts. As soon as you arrive at the falls, you see it – Materuni Falls, thundering from nearly 90 meters high into a natural pool. Dip your feet. Swim, take photos. Or just sit quietly and let it all soak in.

Lunch – Local Chagga Meal (Optional)

Back in the village, enjoy a freshly cooked Chagga-style lunch or alternatively, proceed for a local coffee tour to learn, test and enjoy a locally brewed coffee.
